Black and White

Remembering

I know it is true
that you are gone free, unburdened
by your mind clouding over your spirit, succumbed
to sitting and looking out the window at a view you don’t recognize
hopefully you don’t realize
your sense of humor vanished in a moment
just like your ability to remember simple things
it was clear your strong body didn’t know
how to be now, your mind so still
compared to everyday before
a laundry list of errands or roads to explore

You knew the way
to anywhere, where to find anything in Costco
and best of all you knew how
to make my Grandmother laugh
you didn’t get mad
when she beat you with a better card hand, your friendship
that was easily noticed when you were dancing
or exchanging glances it is clear
it was confusing to you both
to experience your mind letting you down
when you counted on it so solid so firmly sound

Now forgetful unmindful careless slack
distracted absent these are not words I would ever use
to describe the whole you
it is heartbreaking as I’m sure you must have felt too
but now that your life has passed on
now that you are free
from the deepened depths of this disease may you know
we remember you as you were
as we know you wanted to be
and may you rest
in eternal peace now happily remembering

Faulted

It isn’t often we can stand
directly on the line where what is and what was
are on either side, a whole day
of acceptance in speaking in the past tense
while eagerly throwing thoughtful wishes

Of the future to all
when we come into contact with this day
before the next year begins
where we sift through
how we have lived a year (more…)

Night-time Luck

I found myself drawn to the window as the glow from the moon and newly lit tree magnetized the view. My hands reached for my camera before I could question the idea of taking photographs in the darkness. And, as I opened the slider warm night air– such an eerie feeling for the end of November– welcomed me layer-less and eager to begin this experiment. I don’t have a tripod, I know! So, I instantly walked to the edge of our deck and laid on my belly trying to see if I could get all I wanted in the frame. I wasn’t lucky enough to make that work so I sat on the ground in front of the deck, holding the camera on my knee and tilting it into position.

Something Greater

The hum
of a vision, effort
woven into a work of art
dew weighting down the tiniest of tendrils
one strand on its own, only a line
easily torn
but in time and with great effort and care
each well placed line becomes something greater
when strung together holding hands
holding on through the evening
chill and winds blowing from the north, testing
the strength of so much gathered between two grass lengths
grown tall from the summer sun
now holding up this web of detailed wondrous
intentional mesmerizing
daydream-starting
a masterpiece (more…)

Cosmic Blend

And easily my breath retreats
into the shadows of dusk-driven
light as the air
feeling quietly warm with the damp cold of night soon to come
silhouettes shine sharp and true
the sliver of the most dainty tiny moon calls out
hanging low (more…)

The Water Calls

Come dip your toes erase
the perfect stillness get comfortable stay
awhile allow the crispness of my waters
to fold around you to enliven your cells
to remind you of when you were younger, please
aren’t I inviting? (more…)
