On top of the world please
step carefully one foot directly in
front of the other balancing between
fear and everlasting memories
eyes wanting to look down
at each footstep the heart wants to see
beyond the deeply curving horizon beyond
the deepest blue shadows beyond
the doubts and fatigue each breath
shallow but full skimming

I had the pleasure of enjoying the view at the summit of Lassen Peak (10,457 ft) a couple weeks ago. It was our final challenge after backpacking in the back-country of this National Park for 4 days and 3 nights. Two members of our group were in front of me on this final trail to the true summit. I loved how they threw their arms out to their sides like they were flying. The views were marvelous as was the weather.

Hello Laura, I’ve been out of town in Portland until yesterday. Wonderful to hear from you. It was remarkably beautiful and actually warm! With no wind. Such an eerie feeling to be at 10,000+ ft and have it be 75 degrees. They received over 400 inches of snow this year, I was back in the park a week later and almost all this snow was melted! Amazing.
Welcome back Carrie! So glad you enjoyed the beauty of Oregon. I love Portland! Haven’t been there in years. That is indeed warm for that elevation. I was reading we might have a La Nina because the Arctic jet stream isn’t predicted to drop. Maybe that’s why. I’ll look forward to seeing more of your pics! 🙂
I wish I could have been there, Carrie. It looks like my kind of place.I know the feeling of eyes seeking safety while the heart wants to soar that you describe; and I understand the depths of meaning in “true summit.” Too many times I have been fooled.
I wish you could be here too! What a gift to get to hike and share beauty like this with you. Hopefully, one day soon we will share a cup of something warm together and smile at each other in person instead of just with our words. Yes, false summit’s are such a let-down. I love that you know how this feels, it was such a powerful trip with beautiful women. So good to feel strong and capable!
